Seal Failure Analysis

In the event of failure of the seal, in addition to causing damage to the equipment, it may even cause environmental pollution, fire and work safety accidents, which may cause huge losses. The main reason for failure of seals are the designs or material selections which cannot meet the actual working conditions, or seals are operated outside the given working condition range. Furthermore, the poor quality of the seal production or installation are also one of the common reason. Therefore, it is necessary to confirm the main cause of failure through Root Cause Analysis (RCA) in order to take effective measures such as design improvement or material change. The main failure mechanisms of the seals include degradation, blistering, cracks, voids, discoloration or swelling.


Common reason of seal failure

  • Change in system or operating parameter

  • Change in the proportion of media or its components

  • Seal material is incompatible with media

  • Improper maintenance of equipment or media such as hydraulic oil

  • ​Environmental pollution

  • Poor seal selection or improper mating with materials

  • Poor lubrication

  • Temperature or pressure higher than material specification

  • Material aging

  • High friction or PV value leads to early wear

  • Excessive sealing gap leads to extrusion failure

  • Poor surface condition of the mounting or sealing surface


Through the appearance and profile observation of the failed seals, Parjet engineers confirm the failure mechanism of the seals together with the actual operating conditions, and further establish the relevant failure modes and causes through simulation analysis to complete the Root Cause Analysis. After frequent communication with customers, Parjet will improve our countermeasures according to customer needs such as extending the life of seals and failure modes, and develop high-efficiency seals that meet customer expectations.
